George-Greene Area Missions History
The George-Greene Area Missions Program was begun on February 1, 1974 with Horace Glass, Director of Missions. The brick building and 2 acres of land was donated by members of Forest Hill Baptist Church, which had been closed for several years.
The Area Missions Committee is comprised of 3 members plus Moderator from each of the two counties. Present members are: Jimmy Vise, Agricola Baptist Church, Bobby Walley, West Salem Baptist Church, Sterling Dickson, New Hope Baptist Church; Rev. Larry Havard, Bexley Baptist Church; Brent Walley, FBC Sand Hill; Raymond Smith, Rocky Creek Baptist Church; Rev. Greg Barker, Rocky Creek Baptist Church; and Joe Kittrell, FBC McLain.
In 1991 Rev. John W. Henry became the Director of Missions, followed in 2006 by Rev. Jimmy Holcomb.
Additional land has since been purchased and a new 4000 square foot building was built in 2005. The use of the building has grown with Seminary Extension classes, a Baptist Food Bank and VBS clinics. There are currently 33 Southern Baptist churches in the George-Greene Area Missions Program with nearly all giving to help support the work.
