Thirsting for God

1 As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, God. Psalm 42:1 HCSB

Most mornings I get up and run. That is my special time with God, and I really love doing it. Many people think perhaps I have lost my mind when they see me out running, but I have come to realize I need that time with God more than I need breath. I am amazed at how God can take me at a moment in my life when I am so discouraged and spend those moments of the morning to give me the courage and encouragement to charge forth once again to a new day.

The more I am privileged to serve the Lord the more I am convicted of the need of God’s people to have a passion or thirst for the Lord. I see so much of what we have developed into Christianity as just a comfort for members. Looking at our budgets and see how much we spend on buildings and ministries that are for just the membership, and then see ourselves thinking we are doing God a favor to spend 10% on missions. Oh, the need for us to once again to be thirsty for God. When we get thirsty for the Lord, then we are passionate about His glory being displayed to the nation. We need to be so passionate about Him to the point it takes our eyes off ourselves.

One morning this week I was running, and it was a morning that rain was threatening. The little rain frogs were screaming for the rain to come. This was not the first time I heard these little frogs scream for rain and the Lord reminded me we needed to be as passionate about Him as the frogs were for rain. However, what caught my attention this morning was that we had just had record amounts of rain in the past few days. There were people still struggling with flooding and washed out roads, and here were these little frogs screaming for rain like it had been a drought. That is when it occurred to me we get so comfortable with so little for God, and lose our passion.

I pray for the Lord to put a passion in me for Him so great that I will scream for Him even when He floods my soul. With dreary economic forecasts and so many other things facing us we do not need to become discouraged. We need to become thirsty for the Lord. Cry out for Him to pour out His Spirit upon us, so that we can pour out ourselves for His glory. Would you join me with a thirst for the Lord, and cry out for His pouring out upon us.
